Mothers Must Be Honored For Our Lives

None of us would be here if it weren’t for mothers.

While that may not seem a profound statement, it is a fact that some seemingly overlook or forget.

Mothers go well beyond bearing and nurturing young. They are usually best friends and the joy of our lives. We can’t envision not having a mother.

Each of us has special memories of our mother. For us, it’s the big smile and kindness towards everyone, especially those who were less privileged.

What was agitating about Mom then are now fond memories. “Comb your hair.” “Go get a hair cut.” “Put your shirt tail in.” “Stand up straight.” “Polish your boots.”

Because we were the grocery store carryout-delivery boy, there were always orders.“Come here, do this, do that. Take these here, take those there.”

Advice, whatever the subject, was backed by wisdom and motherly love. “Ride your horse in every class; she’s just as good as the others.” “Make sure you keep your job.”

Mom was a horse lover too and took special pride in the fact that she rode her spotted horse to teach school for nine years. We miss her sorely.

Mother’s Day is for celebrating motherhood and thanking mothers. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson created the annual national observance on the second Sunday of May.

Likewise, it’s a time to recognize wives, mothers-in-law, grandmas, aunts and all friends who possess a motherly attitude and direct it our way.

The fourth commandment orders us to “Honor thy Father and thy Mother.”  We must remember Mom on Sunday, May 13.

It can be a gift, a bouquet, a card, a phone call, a special word or a flower on the grave of one deceased. Most important is a prayer for her. It’s the thought that counts.

Proverbs 31:31 advises: “Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the gates.”

Lest we forget two other mothers
who are essential for our being. Genesis 3:20: “Adam named his wife Eve, because
she would become the mother of all the living.”Mary mother of Jesus our God pray
for us.
