Alta Vista’s Old Settlers Day to recognize community during Saturday festivities

Community Appreciation Day is what the long traditional Old Settlers Day celebration has been tagged this Saturday, Sept. 27, at Alta Vista.

According to Pam McDiffett, city official, the Alta Vista Chamber of Commerce has a full slate of activities for all ages scheduled  all day throughout the rural western Wabaunsee County community.

Registration gets underway for the 5K run and walk, at 7 o’clock, and the race leaves the City Park at 8 o’clock, when the vendor market with antiques and crafts begins at the same location.

Not to be left out, kids get in the early action with a pedal pull in the park at9:30, expected to draw competition from a wide area.

Always a popular feature, there’ll again be a model trains display by the MARJ Club at the Baptist Church annex, opening at 10 o’clock.

Highlight of the day is the annual parade down Alta Vista Main Street, with lineup at10:30, and getting started at 11 o’clock. Carol and Pat Smith are the parade marshals this year in recognition of their lifetime service to the community.

Classic cars are to also be a parade highlight and will be displayed throughout the remainder of the day along Main Street.

The Chamber of Commerce is again planning the ever popular hometown dinner atnoon in the park with delicious homemade ice cream again provided by the Masonic Lodge. The ever popular Haymakers Band is to provide special dinner music.

A rock climbing wall will be in operation from noon until 3 in the afternoon, with horseshoes, and sand volleyball competitions getting underway at 1 o’clock.

Kids games in the park at 1:30, are to feature frog and turtle races, bike races and the always most exciting stick horse races.

The barbecue contest judging is at 5 o’clock, in downtown Alta Vista, and the traditional annual alumni reunion for Alta Vista High School graduates is in the middle school building at 7  o’clock.

Lizardskin is to provide music for the dance at 8 o’clock.

Ag Heritage Park at the south edge of the community also has activities planned during the day.
