Opportunities Lost By Sleeping

Early to bed, early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.”

An old familiar saying comes to mind frequently. Especially these shorter days, and even less daylight coming with the government clock fall back, for us who intend. to get lots done at the ranch after working a town job.

It’s been dark pulling out of the driveway for a couple of weeks now, and the sun will barely be visible in the east skyline with the time change. Worst, it’ll certainly be hard to see by the time we pull back in late afternoon.

Typically, we’ve functioned quite well in the morning, usually getting up before the roosters, and as early as most dairymen of days gone by. Of course growing up, the grocery store opened at 7:30, and we had to chore before that, so it comes naturally to get started.

As a student, we always enrolled in the earliest classes of the day, although we were late more than a few times.

Then, our first real job hours were seven to four, so the lifestyle continued. Even in today’s profession, bosses say we don’t have to be there until eight, but it’s close to an hour’s drive, and we like to get there ahead of the big boys.

But, with that lifestyle, when it turned dark outside, we liked to be inside, truly creating havoc for accomplishments during the winter.

When we ease down into that easy chair, the leather covered one that rocks, and reclines back nicely, too, our intentions are to get up and get some tasks finished before bedtime.

That never worked for Mom; she’d sit down to rest, and be sound asleep almost instantly. We’re exactly like her. Thus, we don’t get much of anything done at night.

Add to the dilemma, we wake up during the middle of the night, toss and turn for hours, it seems. So, when  clock says get up, we have a hard time forcing ourself from the toasty bed. That’s sure our excuse for not being wealthy nor wise

Reminds us of Proverbs 10:5: “He who takes advantage of his opportunities acts wisely. But, he who sleeps and ignores the opportunity loses it.” So, First Thessalonians 5:6: “Then, let us not sleep, but be wide awake, self-controlled, calm, and wise.”
