High-Horsepower Tractor Sales Increase With Fewer Combines Sold

Sales of four-wheel drive tractors finished the third quarter of 2023 with a strong upswing in September, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

“With the technology in today’s equipment, it’s no surprise to see the 4WD segment continuing to grow as farmers look to increase their yields,” said Curt Blades at AEM. “This segment has been strong all year, as farmers are continuing to invest in productivity gains for their operations.”

Total farm tractor sales for September 2023 were 21,008, down 4.3 percent from last year with 21,959 sold in 2022.

Year to date, AEM reports 193,278 total farm tractors were sold as of September this year, down 8.2 percent from 210,511 this time last year.

Tractor sales are broken down by horsepower range as follows:

Sales for two-wheel drive under 40 horsepower tractors in September 2023 were down 7.2 percent from 2022, with 12,624 sales this year, and 13,607 last year.

Year to date, AEM reports 125,047 tractors have been sold in this category, down 11.2 percent from 140,821 at the same time last year.

Sales for two-wheel drive, 40-100 horsepower tractors in September were down 7.5 percent, with 5,297 sales this year, and 5,727 last year.

Year to date, AEM reports 45,660 tractors have been sold in this category, down 7.7 percent from 45,660 at the same time last year.

Sales for two-wheel drive 100 plus horsepower tractors in September were up 7.6 percent, with 2,559 sales this year, compared to 2,378 last year.

Year to date, AEM reports 19,507 tractors have been sold in this category, up 7.7 percent from 18,109 at the same time last year.

Sales for four-wheel drive tractors were up 113.8 percent in September, with 528 sales this year, and 247 last year.

Year to date, AEM reports 3,064 tractors have been sold in this category, up 43.3 percent from 2,138 at the same time last year.

Sales for self-propelled combines were down in September, with 896 sales this year compared to 904 last year. Year to date,

However. AEM reports 5,694 combines have been sold as of September, up 25.3 percent from 4,546 at the same time last year.
