Books Always Valuable For Life

Reading is not a waste of time.

While we have always enjoyed reading, and do quite a bit of it, sometimes there are other things that we really should be doing. Watching television or going to some sports event, with the exception of a rodeo or horse show of course, are inefficient, too. Yet, many people spend considerable amount of their lives in those endeavors.

However, reading is our education if we study and comprehend the right material. Likewise, it exercises the mind, and can at the same time relax a person’s system, according to research on such things. Reading and listening are essential for  learning and continuing to be more informed about the vastness of what we don’t  know.

Consequently, newspapers, magazines, books and libraries are some of our favorite things. Of course, most of our in-depth reading has always been about horses and cowboys. It started when we read every one of the Cowboy Sam books, not less than three times each, in the second grade.

Our third grade teacher read us the Little House on the Prairie series, which we read again years later. We had read every cowboy book in the library before elementary graduation. Bulk of our reading now, other than the Bible, is newspapers and periodicals, horse of course. We read a few horse books or biographies, but seldom fiction.

The best selling book worldwide is the Holy Bible. That’s good news. Is it the best read book? Hopefully, but it’s doubtful. Opinions vary on how the Bible should be read. There are those few who have read it from Genesis through Revelation, possibly even more than once. We haven’t, although we have attempted and will at some point.

Others question why one should read the Bible cover to cover? They insist it’s essential to read regularly, but to be selective for what applies to our lives. Truthfully, it is all relevant. There is nothing new under the sun. Every situation we’ll ever encounter is referred to in the Bible. Therefore, one can read it all and return to specifics periodically.

Prophets foretold in the Old Testament what came to realization in the New Testament. Likewise, we know New Testament promises are blessings for our future.

In Malachi 3:16, the messenger said, “A book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.”

The promise is revealed again to prophet John as he wrote in Revelation 22:19: “And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
