“Common sense is far more important than intelligence.”
Never have we proclaimed to have any smarts, nor has anyone credited us with being bright. Yet, often: dull.
Sometimes, we’ve claimed to have common sense, but many question that. Admittedly, we wonder, too, after the outcome of some things.
Hotshots say common sense is a “basic ability of animals including humans to perceive, understand and judge things which are shared, and can be reasonably expected by all.”
Those same know-it-alls say intelligence is one’s “capacity for logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, learning, emotional knowledge, memory, planning and problem solving.” No question we don’t have any.
Yet, those who supposedly know everything about everything, score high on college entrance exams, come out with straight As, and go above the charts on brain testing, often don’t seem to be able to push their chair from the table plate.
They seem to be those who frequently have obviously unflattering hairstyles, and wear clothing that embarrasses us, and should them, but they don’t know it. Moreover, seemingly many won’t stop smoking, quite drinking liquor excessively, abusively consume harmful drugs and even exaggerate, or lie, when talking about any subject.
Somebody said, “It’s surprising they know which leg to put in which hole in their shorts.”
Though we’re reminded of this daily, what brought it to a head was the black cow that plainly didn’t have a lick of sense. In a half-section pasture with ample better places, she went down in the creek filled with water and snow to have her calf.
With only a head showing out of water, the calf was breathing slightly, as our cow manager, barely able to reach it, pulled baby halfway onto dry ground and called for assistance. While help was coming, dummy momma pushed her calf back into the water, and it drowned.
Our common sense has always been poorest when it comes to another horse. Whenever we see a new one, we think we must have it.
Reminds us of Ezekiel 28:4: “Your sharp intelligence made you world-wealthy, but it has gone to your head, what a big head.” Yet, the advice in Proverbs 3:22: “Dear friend, guard clear common sense with your life; don’t for a minute lose sight of it to keep your soul alive, well, safe and sound.”
