“Don’t believe everything that’s in print.”
“Just take it all with a grain of salt” is another way of looking at it.
There are logical reasons to make those contentions.
However, we won’t go that far. Rather, we must admit what one reads is not the always the way it actually is. That can be intentional, or it might be an honest mistake.
As a writer, we’ve made errors because of lack of knowledge, being wrongly confident of our own belief or really not understanding what was said.
One of the most embarrassing errors we’ve made after visiting with a man extensively was misidentifying him repeatedly throughout a very long story.
Others often misspell our name, and we’ve wrongly spelled names, words and used incorrect grammar uncountable times. But completely giving somebody a name out of the sky blue is incomprehensible, even though we’re the one who did it.
Needless to say, we have since double checked and sometimes triple checked names and spelling for complete accuracy
However, as a former editor, we were always extremely conscientious, becoming inwardly offended if someone questioned our editing or rewriting of material.
When we recently submitted a story to a magazine for publication, the editor cordially took the piece down to fit space availability and sent it back for our approval. We responded that we appreciated the opportunity, but it was her job, and we trusted her method of handling the article.
Well, “if there’s a way to make a mistake, it will happen.” One of the persons quoted in our original writing was identified as having a different profession than he has when the story was recomposed.
It was a logical error, anybody could have made. We’re to blame, because we didn’t scan the rewrite. We definitely will in the future.
Thus, it’s a reminder that even when we read anything, or somebody says something, that doesn’t mean it’s always right.
Reminds us of First Corinthians 10:11: “There is warning so that we don’t repeat mistakes. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. Cultivate God.”
Undoubtedly the most quoted and the most important printed word to be remembered is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
