Chase County Teams Win Ranch Rodeos

Buck Creek-Lonesome Pine Ranches of Chase County dominated ranch rodeo competitions sponsored by the Morris County Youth  Rodeo Association Sunday at the arena east of Council Grove. In the Youth Ranch Rodeo during the morning, the Buck Creek-Lonesome Pine team of Sammy Jo Peterson, Mackenzie Higgs and Michelle Patry placed first. The threesome won the […]

Whatever Is To Be Will Be

It was the thirteenth, but fortunately not Friday. Saturday morning is supposed to be sleep-in just a little longer, even though our body tells us to get up and go. Then the phone rang, and we were forced into action. All week long, whenever we’d check the calendar for what was set for the weekend, […]

No Horse Slaughter Plant Yet For Missouri As Antagonists Continue Opposition

“The ‘bleeding hearts’ got reprieve again.” It sounds terribly rude, and crude, but that’s exactly the way one lifelong horse breeder, champion-horse exhibitor, internationally-recognized horse merchandizer, and true horse lover evaluated announcement that a horse slaughter facility to be open in Missouri at this time is not operating due to intrusion from politically-instigated opposition.

Empathy Important Before Criticizing

“Don’t judge another until you’ve walked in their boots.” Of course, the Indians had to walk a mile in another’s moccasins, and most folks have their sneakers on, but message is the same. Others are often criticized for doing something  that is different than the one making the comment thinks it should have been done.

Art, Music, Antique Tractors and More Fun At Pioneer Bluffs Fall Festival

Pioneer Bluffs’ Fall Festival has been listed as one of Kansas Magazine’s 20 Reasons to Love Kansas, and justifiably so as verified by the full slate of activities set for the annual celebration there Saturday, Oct. 6. “Everybody is welcome to visit Pioneer Bluffs, located just a mile north of Matfield Green, on the Flint […]

Never An End To Caution Cones

“Road Closed, Construction Ahead.” “Bridge Out” “Traffic Merges Right, One Lane” “Dead End Road” “Detour, go an extra 25-miles to get where typically it’s just a half-mile up the road.” Those orange signs, and similar ones that we can’t remember, have become so commonplace in daily ventures that we almost ignore them, it seems.

When A Wild Critter Needed To Be Roped, This Was The Cowboy To Call

“I’m going to have a party, and I sure want you to be here.” All-around cowboy Ernie Love of Manhattan expressed that welcome in a call during June. No date was set for the cowboy-fun-affair, but Love grief-in-voice revealed sad-news that doctors had diagnosed terminal cancer.

Recovering Devastated Community To Honor

Heroes help make recovery from disaster possible. Harveyville, Kansas, was stricken by tragedy when a February 28, 2012, tornado destructed the rural Wabaunsee County community, leaving one citizen dead. But, within seconds of devastation, assistance arrived from unbeknownst and has continued coming until much of the town’s damage has been restored.

Good Can Even Come From Bad

“Well, that was exciting.” Truthfully, we had to agree with our grandson after a calf roundup went astray. It was the final of nine pastures to be gathered for an early fall marketing of the year’s crop, when a couple dozen cows and their sucklings wouldn’t go into the pen where aimed.

Five New Inductees For Kansas Cowboy Hall Of Fame At Dodge City’s Boot Hill Museum

“Cowboy-at-heart” is the real stipulation for balloting, and certainly the most recent inductees into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame are that. Five honorees were recognized in different categories during special ceremonies Saturday, Sept. 15, as the tenth class to be inducted with permanent displays at the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, according to […]
